SO FORGIVE ME IF I DO A LITTLE BIT OF THE BASICS JUST TO MAKE SURE WE ALWAYS COVER THAT BUT I ALSO WANT TO TELL YOU WHO WE SERVED LAST YEAR AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE AND HOW WE CAN CONTINUE TO PARTNER. FIRST OF ALL I WANT TO THANK YOU SO MUCH. I HAVE GIVEN THIS PRESENTATION A TIME OR TWO. USUALLY I GIVE IT IN APRIL, I WAS TELLING YOU THAT, BUT AS IT IS, WE MADE IT THROUGH CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH. YOU ALL KNOW THAT THE CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER RESPONDS TO CRIMES AGAINST KIDS WITH A PLACE THAT PEOPLE GO WHEN A CRIME IS ALLEGED. THOSE CRIMES ARE CRIMES THAT CAN HAPPEN IN ANY KIND OF FAMILY, BUT SPECIFICALLY THEY ARE CRIMES OF SEXUAL ABUSE, PHYSICAL ABUSE, CHILD SEX TRAFFICKING. WE ARE ALSO THE PLACE KIDS GO WHEN SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAS HAPPENED THAT THEY HAVE WITNESSED, SO SOMEBODY IN THEIR FAMILY POTENTIALLY A PARENT HAS KILLED ANOTHER PARENT AND THEN KIDS HAVE WATCHED IT. WE ARE THE PLACE THAT A FAMILY COMES WHEN SOMEONE ELSE'S CRIME HAS CHANGED THE COURSE OF THEIR CHILD'S LIFE. THAT'S NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH OUR FRIENDS AT CASA WHO SERVE KIDS WHO ARE IN THE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM. THAT'S PIECE OF THE CHILD ABUSE SPECTRUM, BUT OURS IS MUCH LARGER AND CAN HAPPEN TO A WIDER SWATH OF THE COMMUNITY. AS I MENTIONED, IT'S THE SINGLE ONE-STOP SHOP THAT A FAMILY GOES TO WHEN SOMETHING BAD EMERGES. WE ARE THE PLACE, A NEUTRAL PLACE WHERE AN INVESTIGATION BEGINS TO TAKE PLACE. FOR MANY OF OUR KIDS, THEY NEVER MAKE AN OUTCRY, AND THAT'S THE END OF IT, BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS THEY WENT TO A TRAUMA-INFORMED, CHILD-FRIENDLY PLACE TO MAKE THAT STATEMENT, WHATEVER IT WAS, AND THE INVESTIGATION DIDN'T SCARE THEM. FOR MANY KIDS, THAT IS THE PLACE THEY MAKE AN OUTCRY OF ABUSE, AND THEY GET ALL OF THE SERVICES THAT ARE NEEDED FOR THEIR FAMILY AND FOR THEMSELVES TO BE ABLE TO RECOVER, MENTALLY AND MEDICALLY, AFTER THIS TYPE OF CRIME HAPPENS. IT'S ALSO A PLACE WHERE INVESTIGATORS ALL MEET AND THEY WORK OUT OF TO BRING A CASE, A PURSUANT CASE COME ALL THE WAY THROUGH INVESTIGATION TO JUSTICE. OF COURSE WE WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH CAROL CBD, ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PARTNERS, THEY WOULD TELL YOU THEY ARE THE FAVORITE BUT WE ARE VERY CLOSE WITH THAT TEAM. THEY SPLIT TIME BETWEEN US AND DALLAS ADVOCACY CENTER. THE MAJORITY OF THEIR KIDS END UP COMING THROUGH OUR COUNSELING CENTER, EVEN IF THEY HAVE TO GO TO THE DALLAS CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIONS BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH MORE CONVENIENT FOR YOUR RESIDENCIES HERE. YOU ALL HAVE BEEN SUPPORTING US FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS. AND WE HAVE AN AVERAGE OF 187 CHILDREN EACH YEAR COMING FROM THIS PARTICULAR JURISDICTION, SO A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF KIDDOS [00:25:03] WHO COME THROUGH. THIS BIG RESPONSE IS IMPORTANT IN DENTON COUNTY, IT'S IMPORTANT IN DALLAS COUNTY, BUT IT WASN'T CREATED BY EITHER OF US, IT'S A STATEWIDE AND NATIONAL RESPONSE TO KIDS EVERY KID WHO HAS A CRIME COMMITTED AGAINST THEM HAS THEIR RIGHT TO GO TO AN ADVOCACY CENTER. IT'S THE LAW IN TEXAS. LIKE SO MANY OF OUR WONDERFUL LAWS, THAT LEAVES IT TO THE REST OF US TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE IT WORK, BUT THE COOL THING IS THEY SAID WE ARE GOING TO CUT THROUGH ALL THE RED TAPE THAT HAPPENS WHEN MULTIPLE SYSTEMS COME TOGETHER TO WORK ON CHILD CRIME. WE CUT THROUGH ALL OF THAT AND MAKE SURE A KID GETS WHAT THEY NEED FASTEST AND IN A WAY THAT DOESN'T REVICTIMIZE THEM, SO HONESTLY I WOULD SAY IT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PIECES OF LEGISLATION, REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS HAPPEN BECAUSE OF THIS PIECE OF LEGISLATION, EVEN IF IT DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE MONEY THAT WE WANT TO MAKE IT WORK. SO THAT IS WHY WE COME AND TELL OUR STORY TO PEOPLE SO THAT WE CAN RAISE THOSE ADDITIONAL FUNDS. WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE 1997, BUT IT IS THE LAW IN TEXAS. IN THE LAST YEAR, WE SAW 65% OF OUR CASES WERE SEXUAL ABUSE, ANOTHER 22% WERE PHYSICAL ABUSE. WE SERVE THOSE FELONY-LEVEL PHYSICAL ABUSE CASES, SO THIS IS NOT A LOWER LEVEL PHYSICAL ABUSE ALLEGATION. THESE ARE YOUR CHILD INJURIES THAT RESULT IN EITHER DEATH OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY. THAT'S A FELONY-LEVEL PHYSICAL ABUSE. YOU SEE OUR CHILD FATALITIES, CHILD WITNESS AND NEGLECT ARE MUCH SMALLER PORTION OF THE CASES, BUT WHEN IT HAPPENS, WE ARE ALWAYS PREPARED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THOSE. THE MAJORITY, ALL KIDS, 0-18, ARE ELIGIBLE TO COME TO THE OFFICES, AS ARE ADULTS WHO HAVE A DISABILITY THAT WOULD IMPAIR THEIR ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE AND MAKE THEM SCARED TO GO TO A POLICE STATION, NOT BE ABLE TO GET THAT INFORMATION COMMUNICATED CLEARLY, SO THEY ARE ALSO ELIGIBLE BUT THE MAJORITY OF OUR PEOPLE WHO COME IN ARE KIDS, AND THE LARGE MAJORITY, 78%, ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 13, SO I THINK IT'S A REALLY REMARKABLE STAT EVERY YEAR. YOU ALL KNOW THIS FROM MY TIME HERE. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN BY STRANGERS. AND YET PROBABLY EVERY ONE OF US AS A PARENT HAS CLUTCHED OUR CHILD NEXT TO A STRANGER AND SAID BE CAREFUL OF FRIENDLY STRANGERS COME IT'S ACTUALLY PEOPLE THEY KNOW WHO HAVE BUILT TRUST WITH THE PARENT AND HAVE BETRAYED THAT TRUST THAT ARE OFTEN THE PEOPLE WHO HURT KIDS. 99% OF OUR KIDS. I LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THESE STATS. IT'S A LOT OF INFORMATION, BUT IT TELLS YOU PRETTY CLEARLY SOME OF THE IMPORTANT FACTS. 3000 KIDS WALK THROUGH OUR DOORS EVERY YEAR, OKAY, SO THAT IS NINE NEW KIDS A DAY. THEY ARE, AN ALLEGATION OF ABUSE HAS BEEN OPENED TO AN INVESTIGATOR. ABOUT 60% OF THOSE WILL REPORT THAT ALLEGATION IS BEING FACTUAL, IS BEING TRUE, THEY WILL MAKE AN OUTCRY. WE WILL CONDUCT ABOUT 1200 TO 1500 INTERVIEWS, AND OF THOSE 60%, MAKE AN OUTCRY, THAT MEANS ABOUT 1000 KIDS LAST YEAR, I THINK IT WAS 990 OR SOMETHING, SHOWED UP FOR THERAPY SESSIONS. WE PROVIDED JUST UNDER 10,000 HOURS OF THERAPY, AND 78% SAID THEY GET BETTER WITHIN TEN SESSIONS. WE DO A STANDARDIZED ASSESSMENT. OUR JOB IS TO MAKE SURE WE ARE THAT NEUTRAL PLACE FOR A KID TO TELL THEIR STORY, THEN IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, WE PROVIDE SERVICES, AND IF WE PROVIDE SERVICES, THEY GET BETTER BECAUSE OF THOSE, AND THIS SLIDE, WITH ALL THAT DATA, TELLS YOU ALL THOSE PIECES OF IT. I SAY THAT BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT NINE NEW KIDS A DAY DON'T HAVE A PROSECUTION OF ABUSE. THIS IS JUST THAT ALLEGATION HAS EMERGED. WE'VE GOT A REALLY LARGE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH CLINIC THAT WE ARE RUNNING FOR THESE KIDS OF ABUSE. WHEN THIS TYPE OF ABUSE HAPPENS, I TELL YOU IT'S ASSOCIATED WITH THE WORST OUTCOMES IN OUR COMMUNITY, SO STOPPING IT AND GETTING KIDS THE HEALING SERVICES IS CRUCIAL. SO WE'VE GOT A STAFF OF 14 CLINICIANS AND ANOTHER TEN INTERNS AT ANY GIVEN TIME, SO WE ARE ONE OF THE LARGEST ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH, CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS IN THE COMMUNITY. WE'VE GOT 98 KIDS ON OUR WAIT-LIST. WE GRIEVE THAT. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TELL EACH FAMILY IT WILL BE A BIT BEFORE WE CAN SERVE YOU. I WILL TELL YOU THAT THERE IS NO WAIT ON FORENSIC INTERVIEWS. AS SOON AS YOUR DETECTIVES NEED THAT, THEY ARE ABLE TO BE SERVED, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF GETTING THEM INTO THOSE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES THAT WE HAVE A DELAY ON. WE ARE WORKING ON A LOT OF WAYS TO MAKE THAT GO SMOOTHER AND FASTER BUT AT ANY GIVEN POINT WE HAVE 25 NEW REFERRALS COMING IN EVERY WEEK, SO IT'S A PRETTY HIGH VOLUME CENTER. WE KNOW THE WEEKS SURROUNDING AN OUTCRY ARE SUPER IMPORTANT. ABOUT A THIRD OF KIDS, ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCH IN THE CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY CENTER [00:30:05] MOVEMENT, WILL HAVE A SUICIDAL IDEATION WITHIN THE TWO WEEKS FOLLOWING AN OUTCRY, SO IT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT TIME TO WRAP OUR ARMS AROUND KIDS AND MAKE THEM FEEL THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE THAT THEY ARE SUPPORTED. WE CAN DO THAT THROUGH OTHER WAYS OUTSIDE OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES BY MAKING SURE OUR FAMILY ADVOCATES ARE ALSO REALLY CLOSE TO THE FAMILY, MAKING SURE THEY DON'T FEEL ALONE. WHILE THERE IS A WAIT-LIST, WE ARE ALSO WORKING TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW THIS IS A TIME THEY ARE WITH EXPERTS IN THE FIELD. I ALREADY MENTIONED THIS, 78% OF OUR KIDS HAVE A DECREASE IN TRAUMA SYMPTOMS. I THINK ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT WE LOOK AT IS WE DO A SURVEY WITH OUR KIDS WITH OUR PARENTS, WE DO IT AT THE BEGINNING OF SERVICES, WE DO THEM MIDWAY THROUGH SERVICES, THE BOTTOM LINE IS WE ARE HERE TO SUPPORT KIDS AS THEY GO THROUGH A REALLY TOUGH INVESTIGATION. FOR FAMILIES, IT IS AN ENORMOUS CRISIS PERIOD. SO YOU KNOW, MOST OUTCRIES OF ABUSE ARE DELAYED. SO KIDS HAVE BEEN CARRYING A SECRET FOR A VERY LONG TIME, AND PARENTS ARE JUST FINDING OUT ABOUT IT. IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE OUR KIDS WALK IN READY TO SHARE IT AND ACTUALLY FEEL BETTER BECAUSE OF IT. OUR PARENTS ARE KIND OF THRUST INTO CRISIS AT THAT POINT. LIKE WHOA, I HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS GOING ON. AM I TO BLAME? IT IS A VERY STRESSFUL TIME FOR FAMILIES. EVEN WITH THAT SAID, 100% OF OUR CLIENTS SAY THINGS LIKE YOU GUYS MADE ME FEEL NICE, YOU MADE ME FEEL WELCOME, EVERYTHING HERE WAS INTENTIONAL. THEY DISARMED THE FEAR THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH ALL OF THIS. YOU MADE MY KIDS FEEL SAFE AND HEARD. BOTTOM LINE, 100% OF OUR PEOPLE WHO WALK IN OUR DOORS FEEL THAT THIS COMMUNITY HAS WRAPPED AROUND THEM AT A TIME THAT IS VERY PRIVATE AND ISOLATING AND IT'S A REALLY IMPORTANT TIME TO NOT FUMBLE THE BALL AND BECAUSE OF OUR PARTNERSHIP WE DO NOT FUMBLE THE BALL AND IT IS SOMETHING FOR ALL OF US TO BE PROUD OF. OUR REQUEST THIS YEAR, WE COME IN AND ASK FOR A TON OF MONEY. I KNOW IT IS TRUE. AND YET I WOULD ARGUE THAT IF WE DON'T PROVIDE THIS SERVICE AT THIS POINT, IT GETS VASTLY MORE EXPENSIVE TO SERVE A KID WHO HAS BEEN HURT, WHO HAS NOT BEEN PREPARED. WITH THOSE KIDS WHO ARE HURTING, THEY GO ON TO HURT THEMSELVES, THEY GO ON TO HURT OTHER PEOPLE. THEY BECOME DANGEROUS FOR OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT TEAMS. THEY BECOME DANGEROUS IN OUR SCHOOLS. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TIME TO MAKE A MEANINGFUL IMPACT FOR THEM. AND SO OUR REQUEST IS A LOT, AND YET I WOULD ARGUE IT IS THE CHEAPEST, MOST ECONOMICAL TIME TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS. OUR THREE YEAR, WE HAVE TAKEN A THREE YEAR AVERAGE. WE HAVE SEEN, BECAUSE OF SOME LEGISLATIVE CHANGES, QUITE A SPIKE AND A VALLEY AND AN UP AND A DOWN, IN THE WAY REPORTS ARE PICKED UP, SO THE PIPELINE OF REPORTS, HALFWAY TO REPORTS, SOME LEGISLATIVE. I DON'T THINK WE SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF ABUSE, WE SAW A 10% DECREASE AND A 10% -- I THINK THAT IS MORE BECAUSE OF THE SYSTEM CHANGES AND WE HAVE TO WORK IN BIG SYSTEMS, SO WE HAVE MOVED TO A THREE YEAR LOOK. THAT WAY WE CAN JUST MAKE SURE, YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY -- >> EBBS AND FLOWS. >> WE MANAGE THE EBBS AND FLOWS. WE ANTICIPATE SERVING ABOUT ANOTHER 167 KIDS THIS YEAR.
